Middle Wabash-Busseron Watershed

December 2004

Description of Watershed

The estimated area in the watershed is 1,292,892 acres, with 600,600 acres located in Illinois. This watershed is located in portions of Clark, Crawford, Edgar, Lawrence and Vermilion counties in Illinois and portions of Clay, Greene, Knox, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana.

Major land use in the watershed consist of cropland, pastureland and forested wetlands. The watershed includes a transition zone between the beech-maple forests of the eastern United States and the prairie and oak-hickory forests of the west. The area is underlain by Pennsylvania limestone, sandstone, shale and coal. Most of the area has been covered by a thick layer of loess that thins to the west and east of the river valley source. The soils are generally moderately deep to very deep, poorly drained to well drained, and silty or loamy subsoils.

In the cropland areas of the watershed, there are about 1049 farms covering 404,200 acres. The average size farm is 480 acres. Primary crops include corn and soybeans, but feed grains, hay and pasture crops are also grown. Irrigated vegetables and specialty crops are grown on terraces and flood plains in the major river valleys.

In the grassland areas of the watershed, there are about 33,200 acres with livestock.
